Donald A. Richard saved Ann Marie Baxley from drowning, Usk, British Columbia, August 3, 1978. Ann Marie, 10, and her father were on the Skeena River in a kayak; and when the craft overturned, the father drowned. Ann Marie, who had climbed onto the overturned kayak, was seen by Richard, 27, railroad trackman. He undressed, entered the water, and managed to overtake the kayak as it was being carried downstream by the strong current in deep water. Unable to move the kayak toward the bank, Richard took Ann Marie on his back and began swimming with difficulty because of the current. He was carried a considerable distance downstream before reaching the bank safely with Ann Marie.
