Donald A. Sweetland, 14, schoolboy, rescued Jesse E. Biegemann, 21, farmer, from an enraged bull, Genesee, Wisconsin, February 4, 1950. When a bull did not follow other cattle into a barn but remained alone in the barnyard enclosed by a wall, Biegemann, who was carrying a pitchfork, walked toward it to get hold of the ring in its nose. The bull suddenly charged, flipping the pitchfork from him, pinning him with its horns, and tossing him twice. As he fell the second time, he got hold of the ring with one hand and lay face down. He was dazed but retained his hold. Donald, who feared the bull and never had handled it, jumped from the wall into the barnyard, walked slowly and warily 25 feet to within reach of the bull, and, grasping the ring, pulled it from Biegemann’s grasp. Holding the ring with both hands, he walked backward 50 feet to an open doorway of the barn and 20 feet inside it to a bullpen, at the door of which he stepped aside. The bull entered the pen, and Sweetland closed the door. Biegemann was injured seriously but recovered in two months. 3651-41966
