Donald C. Benson, 12, schoolboy, saved Nicholas W. Scanlan, 5, from drowning, Colegrove, Pennsylvania, August 21, 1920. Nicholas fell from a bridge into a pool, where the water was eight feet deep. Donald jumped from the bridge into the water, grasped Nicholas by the clothing, and swam with him about 11 feet to the end of an abutment of the bridge. With some difficulty he got support on a step of the abutment, and with the help of another boy Nicholas was drawn upon the abutment. Donald then pulled himself upon the abutment. 21345-1794
