Donald F. Donaldson, Jr., died attempting to save Jean M. Gernhardt from drowning, Dongan Hills, New York, September 26, 1932. Jean, 5, toppled from the wall of a swimming pool into water seven feet deep, dipped slightly under the surface, and began to thresh six feet from the wall. Donald, 9, schoolboy, who was a poor swimmer, removed his shoes and plunged from the wall toward Jean. He struck the water flatly and brushed against Jean. His movements were not closely observed, but soon thereafter Jean was close to the wall. A girl who was on the wall pulled her out of the water. Donald then was struggling about 10 feet from the wall. He threshed feebly a moment, sank, and drowned.
