Donald G. Tolbert helped attempt to rescue Johnny A. Lane from electrocution, Atlanta, Georgia, March 11, 1988. An electric company employee, Lane, 35, entered an underground power distribution vault that was partially filled with water and was electrocuted after contacting an energized component. A co-worker, Tolbert, 26, winch truck operator, was outside the vault at ground level when he became aware of the situation. Tolbert descended into the vault for Lane, and, although he received a shock when he stepped to the floor of the vault, he remained inside for at least 30 minutes, keeping Lane’s head out of the water and working to pull him out of the vault. Tolbert was joined by another man who then assisted, but they were unable to remove Lane. Lane was eventually pulled from the vault by rescue personnel, after the electricity was turned off, but he could not be revived.
