Donald H. Stoops, 17, student, saved Pauline E. Holmes, 13, and L. Beatrice Doswell, 15, from drowning, Pickwick Park, Indiana, June 16, 1913. Pauline stepped over the edge of a channel in Wawasee Lake, and Beatrice, extending her hand to help, also stepped into deep water. They were very poor swimmers, and both became distressed in water six to seven feet deep. Donald, who had lost his left arm eight months before and was doubtful as to his swimming ability, waded, fully dressed, to the edge of the channel and swam toward the points where the girls had sunk. He dropped to the bottom behind Pauline, who was practically unconscious, and walked six feet, under the surface, to shallow water, pushing her ahead of him with his shoulder. He then swam back nine feet to Beatrice and got her to shallow water in the same way. He was ill after the act but recovered. 11251-1207
