Donald I. Gordon saved Eliza N. and Julius F. Williams from burning , Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, April 22, 1989. Eliza, 1, and Julius, 2, were inside their family’s second-floor apartment when fire broke out in the kitchen and filled the apartment with smoke. Alerted to the fire, Gordon, 51, disabled, went to the scene and learned that the apartment was occupied. Despite dense smoke which severely limited visibility, and intense heat, Gordon entered the apartment and searched until he found Eliza and Julius, who were in a bedroom. Gordon picked the children up and began to flee the apartment but became disoriented momentarily and entered the apartment’s bathroom. Retracing his steps, Gordon left the apartment, taking the children to safety. He and the children were then taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
