Donald N. Schofield helped to save Benjamin M. C., Joshua W. C., and Marvin D. Drewes from drowning, Leduc, Alberta, April 17, 1994. Drewes, 49, and his sons, Benjamin, 8, and Joshua, 10, were in a boat in an area of open water of Coal Lake, which was otherwise frozen over. The boat tipped, spilling them into the frigid water about 100 feet from the bank, and Benjamin was trapped beneath the boat, tangled in a net. Schofield, 22, who was fishing from the bank, entered the water and swam to the boat. He lifted one end of the boat to enable another man who had swum out to free Benjamin. As that man took Benjamin to the bank, Schofield grasped Joshua and, pushing Drewes, swam to the bank, submerging en route. Drewes and his sons sought hospital treatment, and Schofield was treated at the hospital for a migraine headache. All recovered.
