Donald R. Wilkinson died after attempting to rescue the crewmen of a disabled tanker during a severe storm, Gloucester, Massachusetts, February 6, 1978. When a foreign oil tanker got into trouble off the Massachusetts coast during a blinding snowstorm and called for assistance, a pilot boat operator set out to give aid in his 45-foot craft, the CAN DO, accompanied by Wilkinson, 36, business manager, and three other men. Winds up to 80 m.p.h. and swells surpassing 30 feet in height caused the CAN DO to sink. Wilkinson and the other four men drowned. 56194-6339
