Donald Ralph Miller died attempting to save Eileen M. M. Meyers from drowning, Dares Beach, Maryland, July 24, 1946. While in a fishing party aboard a cabin-cruiser anchored in Chesapeake Bay 2,100 feet southwest of Sharps Island, Miss Meyers, 34, fell from the cruiser and drifted with a current of three quarters of a m.p.h. in water 33 feet deep. It was night, and visibility was poor. Miller, 27, bricklayer, dived from the cruiser and rose to the surface holding Miss Meyers with one arm. She struggled, her arms striking his face; and he called for a life-preserver. They drifted farther from the boat. Two life-jackets and a rope were thrown toward them but landed out of their reach. A man holding the rope, which was tied to the cruiser, swam 80 feet in the direction Miller and Miss Meyers had been drifting, but he could not see or hear them and returned to the cruiser. A search-light on the cruiser was then turned on; and after searching for 15 minutes, Miss Meyers was found floating unconscious and was picked up. She was revived and recovered. Miller’s body was washed ashore 10 days later. 41216-3545
