Donald Ray Brazile saved Elizabeth J. Mayer from burning, Los Angeles, California, March 10, 1972. The automobile in which Elizabeth, 4, was riding was involved in an accident and so badly damaged that she was trapped in a crumpled section as flames broke out at the rear and along one side of the vehicle. After the others in the automobile had been aided from it, Brazile, 19, hospital assistant, crawled into a window opening to free Elizabeth. Flames by then had spread to the interior. By pulling, pushing, and twisting Elizabeth, Brazile succeeded in dislodging her. Another man, pulling on Brazile’s legs, drew him partly out of the vehicle. Brazile then completed his exit and withdrew Elizabeth. The automobile soon afterward was filled with flames. 52663-6003
