Donald Wayne Cole, Jr., helped to save Brian D. Quinlan from drowning, Richmond, Virginia, January 2, 1977. While skating on a pond, Brian, 13, broke through the ice into deep water; but each time he tried to climb out, the ice broke off. Donald, 13, schoolboy, went to the hole, where the ice broke under him and he also fell into the water. When Donald climbed out and made another attempt to aid Brian, the ice again broke under him. Brian caused Donald to be submerged briefly several times. Donald supported Brian while another boy pushed a rowboat to the hole, got into the craft, and then aided Donald and Brian aboard. By means of a rope, the boat then was pulled to the bank. 55708-6297
