Donnie Leroy Bushman rescued Alan Burke while he was in a runaway automobile, Omaha, Nebraska, July 19, 1978. Alan, 4, was in the front seat of an automobile when it began moving down the sloping apron of a service station, headed toward the gasoline pumps and the heavily-traveled street beyond. Bushman, 44, service station manager, ran to the driver’s side of the automobile and, unable to open the door, thrust himself halfway through the window opening. He grasped the steering wheel and, barely able to see ahead because the sedan’s hood was up, turned the automobile enough to miss the gasoline pumps and a utility pole. As the automobile entered the street, Bushman turned it toward a driveway and stopped it there after climbing fully into the sedan.
