Dorothy Dean Wagener, 13, schoolgirl, saved Ethel G., 11, and Virgil F. Starr, 9, from drowning, Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, August 5, 1922. While bathing in Sturgeon Bay, Virgil got in water over his depth, 16 feet from a boathouse. Ethel went to his assistance, and they struggled together and went under the surface several times. Dorothy swam to them from the boathouse, and as she reached them, Virgil grasped her at the shoulders. Both children continued to grab at her, submerging her several times, but Dorothy then took hold of Virgil by the hair, causing him to cease struggling. Holding Virgil with one hand, Dorothy swam 16 feet to wadable water while Ethel swam beside her, holding lightly to her arm. 22680-1883
