Dorothy E. Fahey, 18, schoolgirl, saved J. Wallis Carpenter, 25, bookkeeper, from drowning, Camp Walton, Florida, August 19, 1926. Carpenter swam to his wife, who had swum 150 feet from a pier in the Santa Rosa Sound and could not swim back on account of a current. He was unable to help her, and they drifted farther from the pier. Miss Fahey waded from shore and then swam 185 feet to Carpenter. About the same time her sister, whom she had followed, reached his wife. Carpenter grabbed Miss Fahey around the neck, but she freed herself and swam 20 feet with him. Her sister and Carpenter’s wife were gotten into a boat, which then reached her, and Carpenter, who had become unconscious, was put into the boat as well. Miss Fahey swam to wadable water. Carpenter was revived. 26674-2249
