Douglas Glenn DeBolt saved Stephonte R. McClary from burning, Hampton, Virginia, March 3, 1992. Stephonte, 1, was in a crib in a first-floor bedroom of his family’s house when fire erupted in the hall, just outside the bedroom door. DeBolt, 30, commercial fisherman, was visiting in the neighborhood when he was alerted to the fire. He entered the house, crawled through the living room, then ran through flames in the hall to Stephonte’s bedroom, in which visibility was nil. From outside the house, Stephonte’s father had broken a window to the bedroom, and he told DeBolt the location of Stephonte’s crib. DeBolt found the boy, then, guided by the sound of those outside, went to the window with him and handed him out to his father. DeBolt then exited through the window. Stephonte was treated at the hospital for smoke inhalation, and DeBolt was treated for burns to his feet; both recovered
