Douglas Nielsen died attempting to save Brian Ebersole from drowning, Port Colborne, Ontario, December 27, 1989. Ebersole, 41, and two friends, including Nielsen, 44, were ice fishing on Lake Erie when Ebersole, driving a snowmobile, fell through the ice. Nielsen immediately mounted a second snowmobile and drove toward him. As he neared Ebersole, he too broke through the ice. Despite several attempts by the third man to rescue them, Nielsen and Ebersole submerged. Their friend returned to shore and sought help, but responding authorities could not locate the two men, whose bodies were recovered from the lake months later.
