Douglas S. Jones saved Kenneth R. Grant from burning, Summer Lake, Oregon, September 30, 1993. Grant, 76, was the driver of a motor home that traveled off a narrow gravel road, overturned onto its passenger side, and caught fire. After observing the accident, Jones, 33, disabled driller’s helper, immediately ran to the scene and climbed onto the driver’s side of the motor home. He opened the driver’s door and then, kneeling, reached inside and released Grant’s safety belt. Although under physical restrictions because of a disabling back injury, Jones pulled Grant from the motor home and then handed him down to Jones’s father, who also responded to the scene. Jones then jumped to the ground, over spreading flames, and helped his father walk Grant to the road. The motor home and the pickup truck it was towing were destroyed by the fire.
