Douc Dang Pham rescued Robert H. Hennessee, Jr., from a gang attack, Rockville, Maryland, April 2, 1971. In a college parking lot, Hennessee, 18, college student, was attacked by about 25 young men armed mainly with sharpened wooden stakes. Pham, 19, college student, noted the situation and diverted the gang’s attention from Hennessee to himself. The gang surged toward Pham, threatening him with their weapons. He led them away from Hennessee, who then was able despite injuries to depart. Pham, who had sustained bruises at the hands of the gang, ran into a college building where a dance was being held, and the gang dispersed. Hennessee was hospitalized for injuries including a broken nose, cracked ribs, and stab wounds. He recovered.
