E. Donald Ryan, 12, schoolboy, attempted to save Harland A. C. Lehnigk, 12, schoolboy, from drowning, Oshkosh, Wisconsin, December 1, 1911. Harland, a good swimmer, broke through thin ice 300 feet from the bank of Lake Winnebago where the water was seven feet deep. Although he had been warned that the ice was not safe, Donald, a poor swimmer, skated to the hole from a place of safety. He knelt at the side of the hole and leaned toward Harland, but the ice broke and he too fell into the water. Donald was saved by another boy, but Harland was drowned. 11736-845
