E. Erle Drummond, 16, schoolboy, saved Katherine C. Williamson and Alice O. Johnstone, both 13, from drowning, Hampton, Virginia, January 11, 1918. Katherine, Alice, and Erle’s sister were sliding on the ice on Hampton Creek 400 feet from the bank and broke through, where the water was about eight feet deep. Erle skated to the hole and extended a hockey stick and then broke through the ice, losing the hockey stick. He trod water, got back of the girls, and pushed and raised Katherine till she scrambled on the ice. He assisted his sister and Alice in turn on the ice in the same way and then got on the ice himself. 18644-1579
