E. Rudolph Lane saved L. Altheus Mayo and attempted to save J. Howard Cobb, from drowning, Bagley, North Carolina, June 22, 1922. While sitting on the apron of a dam in the Little River, Altheus, 16, student, fell into water six feet deep just below the dam. Rudolph, 17, student, who had been sitting near him, dived into the rough water and rose facing him. Altheus grasped Rudolph around the waist, but Rudolph broke the hold. Rudolph then got behind Altheus and gradually pushed him 25 feet to wadable water. Just then Rudolph’s attention was attracted to Howard, 16, student, who had fallen from the apron and was being rolled around close to the dam. Rudolph waded a short distance around the deep water to the dam and then cautiously waded on the apron 42 feet in water two feet deep, to a point opposite Howard. As Howard drifted within three feet of the apron, Rudolph got hold of his bathing suit and drew him up on the apron. He then attempted to tie a rope, which had been tossed to him, around Howard, but it was jerked away before being tied fast, and Howard and Rudolph fell from the apron into deep water. Rudolph was carried 20 feet from the apron under water, and after rising to the surface, he was carried by the current 20 feet farther to wadable water. Howard was drowned. 23323-2001
