E. Wayne Cooper, 15, factory hand, saved Roberta M. Reeder, 3, from being killed by a train, Beattyville, Kentucky, October 1, 1916. Roberta was standing on a track on which a passenger train was approaching. Cooper ran to the scene, stepped onto the track, and placed his arm around Roberta. The train was then 15 feet from him and was advancing at a speed of 35 m.p.h. As Cooper was about to step off the track, he fell away from it with Roberta on top of him. His leg was grazed by the locomotive and slightly bruised. Roberta was not hurt. 17202-1350
