Earl Byers, 25, rigger, attempted to save George Vuknic, 24, rigger, from suffocation, McKeesport, Pennsylvania, October 15, 1917. (See case of FRANK P. MULLALY.) After Mullaly’s attempt, Byers entered the flue and reached Vuknic, who was nearer to the manhole than Shearer was. Byers stooped to tie a rope to Vuknic but was suddenly overcome and fell on top of Vuknic. He was removed when he had been in the flue about 10 minutes, and he was revived in less than an hour with the aid of a pulmotor. He was not permanently affected. 18503-1362
