Earl Gene Castle, Jr. helped to save Charles L. Breeding and attempted to save William J. Arden from suffocation, Dante, Virginia, April 4, 1978. In a coal mine tunnel, Breeding, 28, was overcome by lack of oxygen. Castle, 19, shuttle car operator, went to Breeding, ministered to him, and then went to the aid of Arden, 25, who also had lost consciousness. Castle was overcome. After workmen had aided Breeding and others out of the tunnel, Castle revived and walked out unaided. Breeding was revived, but Arden died.
