Earle R. Porter, 17, student, saved Edson V. Mitchell, 18, student, from drowning, Cumberland Center, Maine, June 11, 1914. Mitchell had a cramp and became distressed 35 feet from the bank of Rowe’s pond. Earle swam from the bank to Mitchell but was seized by Mitchell and carried under the surface. He freed himself, rose to the surface, procured a board that was thrown toward him from the bank, and placed it within Mitchell’s grasp. He then swam 25 feet to wadable water, pushing Mitchell ahead of him. Mitchell was unconscious but was revived. Earle was not seriously affected. 13185-1199
