Eddie A. Turner rescued Frank X. Farnan from falling, Clewiston, Florida, October 16, 1988. Farnan, 45, was knocked unconscious after a mid-air collision with another skydiver. Thus unable to pull his parachute’s rip cord, Farnan fell out of control, spinning, toward the ground. Jumping with Farnan, Turner, 33, airline pilot, increased the speed of his fall, diving several thousand feet to catch up to him. Passing the altitude at which he would have normally opened his parachute, Turner maneuvered close to Parnan, reached across his chest, and pulled the rip cord of Farnan’s emergency parachute. After pushing Farnan away from him, Turner, then at an altitude of about 1,800 feet or about 10 seconds from the ground, immediately pulled the rip cord of his own parachute. Both men landed safely. Farnan was hospitalized for a concussion, from which he recovered.
