Eddie B. Coffield died attempting to save Wilbert Ball from drowning, San Angelo, Texas, May 23, 1941. Wilbert, 10, fell into the South Concho River in water eight feet deep five feet from the bank. Coffield, 16, schoolboy, who was a poor swimmer and was fully clothed, from the bank extended his arm toward Wilbert but did not reach him. Another boy called to Coffield not to enter the water. Coffield jumped into the water, was submerged, rose at a point five feet from the bank, and splashed. Wilbert then was four feet farther from the bank. Coffield sank and was drowned. A man jumped into the water and took Wilbert to the bank. Wilbert was unconscious but was revived. Coffield’s body was recovered 40 minutes after the accident. 39036-3225
