Edena B. Bradshaw, 20, student, rescued Linnie Lu Ryder, 23, from burning, Exeter, California, October 30, 1949. In a collision at night, an automobile occupied by Mrs. Ryder, Miss Bradshaw, and two youths was overturned alongside a highway. The fuel tank was ruptured, and the automobile and the ground adjacent to it were showered with gasoline. Miss Bradshaw and one of the youths crawled from the automobile, but Mrs. Ryder and the other youth lay unconscious inside. The gasoline was ignited, flames enveloping the exterior of the automobile and rising in gusts for 15 feet above it. Miss Bradshaw ran five feet through scattered flames a foot high to the automobile and extended her head and arms through an open doorway. Flames rose eight inches at places in the passenger compartment, and heat was blistering. Miss Bradshaw took bold of Mrs. Ryder, whose clothing was afire, and pulled her through the doorway. She dragged Mrs. Ryder five feet from the automobile and, assisted by the youth, carried her 15 feet farther from it. Mrs. Ryder was severely burned and was hospitalized for two months.
