Edgar A. Nelson saved Dewitt Warden from drowning, Guthrie, Oklahoma, May 16, 1913. Dewitt, 7, who could not swim, jumped from a boat in fright and went beneath the surface in water about 12 feet deep in Cottonwood Creek. When he learned of the accident, Nelson, 24, city fireman, was in bed suffering from an acute attack of appendicitis and had been urged by his physician to undergo an operation. He immediately put on his trousers, ran 100 feet, and dived into the water. Dewitt was then unconscious and was beneath the surface, his position being indicated by bubbles at the surface. Nelson’s dive carried him 20 feet. He came up without having found Dewitt, then he let himself down, pulled Dewitt to the surface, and swam 10 feet to the opposite bank. Nelson supported Dewitt for a short time, and then other men pulled Dewitt from the water and gave him attention. He was revived. Nelson suffered no disability as a result of his act. 11053-1091
