Edmund James Watchuk rescued David N. leNobel from an attack by a bear, Hudson Hope, British Columbia, June 6, 1975. In a rather remote area, leNobel, 28, climbed into a tree when he saw an adult female bear approaching; but the bear grasped his heel in its jaws. Watchuk, 23, college student, was 50 feet away and downwind of the bear. He shouted at it to try to frighten it off. The bear released leNobel, who had sustained only superficial injuries from its attack, and started toward Watchuk, who climbed into another tree. Grasping Watchuk by the foot, the bear pulled him out of the tree. It then badly mauled Watchuk, who suffered severe leg and body injuries before the animal abandoned him and ran off into the brush. Watchuk recovered after extensive hospitalization.
