Edna M. Sexton, 12, schoolgirl, saved Alice M. Lappen, 21, from drowning, Milford, Connecticut, July 30, 1915. Miss Lappen became distressed in water over her head in depth 500 feet from the shore of Long Island Sound. Edna, who was six inches shorter than Miss Lappen, jumped from an anchored boat and swam 12 feet to her. She seized Miss Lappen but was unable to swim with her, and they were carried past the boat by a current. When Edna had supported Miss Lappen fully five minutes, help reached them, and they were taken ashore. Miss Lappen was unconscious, and Edna was exhausted, but both recovered. 15687-1309
