Edward A. Brown saved Thao T. Truong from burning, Hamilton, Ontario, February 3, 1993. Thoa, 2, remained in her family’s apartment, on the 12th floor of a 15 story building, when fire broke out in one of the apartment’s bedrooms. Informed of the situation, Brown, 27, the building’s superintendent, immediately went to the 12th floor, but dense smoke prevented him from entering the burning apartment. With one of the building’s fire hoses, he sprayed water into the apartment, then, intending to dissipate the smoke further by opening the apartment’s sliding glass doors, he crawled into the living room. In the intense heat and dense smoke, which severly limited visibility, Brown brushed against Thao, who was lying, unconscious, on a couch in from of the glass doors. Brown picked her up, then ran out of the apartment with her to safety and began to resuscitate her. Thao was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, and she recovered. Brown was given oxygen at the scene for having inhaled smoke. He too recovered. 67532-7793
