Edward B. Mitchell, 17, schoolboy, helped to save Mary Jane Godfrey, 28, from drowning, Folly Beach, South Carolina, September 15, 1950. While bathing in rough surf in the Atlantic Ocean, Mrs. Godfrey was swept into deep water by a strong undercurrent and called for help. Edward and Malcolm L. Danner, each perspiring freely from playing baseball, ran 300 feet to the shore and entered the surf, removing only their shoes and shirts. Edward followed by Malcolm waded from shore and swam 1,000 feet to Mrs. Godfrey through waves two to three feet high. Although winded and tired, they took hold of her and with difficulty swam shoreward supporting her. They gained footing 100 feet from shore and waded supporting Mrs. Godfrey from the water. She then became semiconscious but was revived. Edward and Malcolm were chilled, fatigued, and winded but recovered. 42098-3688
