Edward Davis, 32, pump man, died saving James E. Dougherty, 21, still man, from suffocation, Heidelberg, Pennsylvania, March 27, 1916. (See case of JAMES E. DOUGHERTY.) With a wet handkerchief over his nose and mouth, Davis entered the kettle for Dougherty, but he was affected by the fumes before he could lift him and hurriedly ascended. After another man had made an unsuccessful attempt. Davis re-entered with the handkerchief over his face and a rope tied around him. He tied another rope to Dougherty and hurried from the kettle. As he emerged, he gasped and fell unconscious, and efforts to revive him with a pulmotor were fruitless. Dougherty was drawn out by means of the rope that Davis had attached to him. 16291-1214
