Edward H. Cherry died attempting to save Darryl V. Thomas from drowning, Jacksonville, Florida, April 2, 1972. Darryl, 8, who could not swim, fell from a boat into deep water 25 feet from the bank of a small lake. He thrashed wildly and called for help. Edward, 14, schoolboy dived fully clothed into the water from a boat near Darryl and swam to him. Others aboard the boats saw Edward take hold of Darryl. The others looked to the handling of their boats; and when they next glanced toward Edward and Darryl, both had disappeared from sight. Neither reappeared. Divers later recovered the bodies of Edward and Darryl.
