Edward J. Goff, Jr., died attempting to save Floyd T. Huckeby from drowning, Fargo, North Dakota, July 26, 1953. While swimming in the Red River of the North, Huckeby, 29, was swept over a dam into an area of turbulent water eight feet deep in a stilling basin extending 20 feet from the dam. He alternately sank and rose. Attracted by Huckeby’s calls for help, Goff, 35, railroad car inspector, alighted from an automobile and ran to the river. Despite the pleas of his six-year-old son, Goff removed his shirt and shoes and dived into the water. Swimming 35 feet from the bank, Goff drifted four feet over the dam into the lower pool and approached Huckeby. Repeatedly they were thrust toward the face of the dam and submerged in the strong revolving current. A man on the bank cast a fishing line toward Huckeby and Goff but was unable to pull either man to the bank. They remained close together in the water for five minutes and then sank separately and did not reappear. 3890-42922
