Edward J. Gyarfas rescued Beatrice Krupnick from assault, Trenton, New Jersey, February 9, 1996. Ms. Krupnick, 60, was walking in a parking lot toward the office building in which she worked when a 33-year-old man approached and knocked her to the pavement. The assailant then swung a knife at her, striking her at least twice. Gyarfas, 43, tax analyst, who moments earlier had been conversing with the man and found him to be disturbed, rushed to Ms. Krupnick’s aid. He grasped the assailant and pulled him away from Ms. Krupnick, at which time the assailant swung the knife at Gyarfas and kicked him in the arm. The assailant then ceased his attack and fled but was apprehended shortly. Ms. Krupnick received hospital treatment for a knife wound, and she recovered. Gyarfas also required treatment for effects of the assault, and he too recovered.
