Edward J. McDonald saved Albert A. Akulauckas from burning, Pottsville, Pennsylvania, July 15, 1987. Akulauckas, 80, was the driver of a car that struck fuel pumps at a service station, spilling gasoline in the immediate vicinity. Flames erupted on the rear of the car and spread to the nearby pumps. McDonald, 53, a patron at the service station, ran to the burning car. He opened the driver’s door with difficulty, then partially entered the car, grasped Akulauckas, and pulled him out to safety. Akulauckas was hospitalized for injuries received during the crash. McDonald incurred a burn to his leg. Both recovered.
