Edward M. Hammann, 32, inspector, saved Michael Flood, 11, from drowning, Woonsocket, Rhode Island, November 20, 1915. Michael fell from a bridge into the Blackstone River and drifted downstream 100 feet from the bank. Hammann, who had never swum more than 30 feet and who wore heavy clothing and shoes, swam 115 feet to Michael, seized Michael’s clothing, and started shoreward with him. Hammann became so tired that he let his feet down when 25 feet from shore and happened to find footing on a wall of an old canal. After a wait of about eight minutes a rope was thrown out, and Michael was drawn ashore with it. Hammann swam ashore from the wall. Michael was unconscious, and Hammann was chilled and very tired, but both recovered. 15745-1322
