Edward McSheffery attempted to save Fred Brooks from burning, Bath, New Brunswick, May 14, 1925. Fred, 4, and a younger brother were alone in the house at midnight, and in some unknown way the house caught fire. Men forced open the outside door of a room that was full of smoke, and flames came through the open door from an adjoining room. McSheffery, 45, blacksmith, at a time when the flames through the door subsided, hastily entered the room, crossed to the far side, and felt over Fred’s bed. He did not find Fred, and as he turned to leave, he put up his hands to shield his face from the heat and became bewildered. He staggered around until he was within five feet of the door and then stood with his back to it. A man then reached inside the door, grasped McSheffery’s shoulder, and jerked him out of the house. McSheffery was burned about the face, head, and neck, and his hands were badly burned. He was totally disabled for five weeks. The children were burned to death. 25231-1999
