Edward R. Dillon saved Donald R. Hughes, 11; Albert E. Caswell, 9, and Arthur Crawmer, 11, from drowning, Troy, New York, December 26, 1911. The boys broke through weak ice on Burden’s Pond at a point 35 feet from the bank, where the water was four feet deep. Dillon, 19, clerk, was on the opposite bank. He went over 800 feet across the weak ice, passing for the greater part of the distance over deep water, and then broke through the ice 35 feet from the boys, where the water was about six feet deep. He broke the ice ahead of him and swam to the boys, who were becoming unconscious. He grasped all three in his arms and then discovered that he could stand on the bottom with his head above the surface of the water. Another man waded out from the near bank and helped in getting the boys to the bank. They all recovered. 12020-1093
