Edward V. Coleman, 45, railroad conductor, saved Frank M. Berncic, 12, and Barbara A. Skirtich, 13, from being killed by a train, Etna, Pennsylvania, March 6, 1925. Frank and Barbara were walking on a track on which a train was approaching behind them at a speed of 18 m.p.h. Coleman was on a gondola car of a freight train which was passing the children slowly in the opposite direction on an adjacent track. On the opposite adjacent track, another train was passing at a speed of about 12 m.p.h. Coleman jumped from the top of the side of the car, landing on the track 100 feet from the locomotive. He then ran down the middle of the track for 125 feet to the children and grabbed each with a hand and stepped off the track with them 20 feet ahead of the locomotive. He then held the children in a clear space 32 inches wide while the train passed. 25111-2040
