Edward W. Burke, 45, farmer and salesman, died attempting to save Essie J. Jesse, 14, from suffocation, Drennan, Colorado, September 24, 1927. Essie descended to the bottom of a short ladder in a silo and jumped five feet to the surface of the ensilage, which was 14 feet below the top of the silo. A few seconds later she was overcome as she was about to climb the ladder. Burke, who knew of the dangers in silos, descended the ladder, jumped down to the ensilage, and tried to pull Essie’s hands from the ladder. In a moment she slumped down, and Burke was overcome and sank on top of her. Both were dead when removed from the silo more than a half-hour later. 28484-2301
