Edward Wayne Cooper died attempting to save William W. Gatlin IV from drowning, Brownwood, Texas, June 10, 1991. Gatlin, 18, was swimming in Pecan Bayou near the base of a dam when he became caught in the currents atthe dam. He shouted for help. His friend, Edward, 17, atop a concrete wall abutting the dam, threw one end of a fishing line toward him, but it did not reach him. Edward then jumped into the water at the base of the dam and swam toward Gatlin. Before he could reach him, he too encountered difficulty in the rough water. He called for help and submerged. Gatlin freed himself from the currents and exited the bayou farther downstream. Edward’s body was located in the bayou near the dam several hours later. He had drowned
