Edwin A. Crolius, 19, bank clerk, saved Arthur H. Jacks, 25; Melvin C. Smeck, 21; Edgar A. Russell, 29; and Harry S. Ditchburne, 21, from drowning, Chicago, Illinois, August 3, 1906. Crolius swam from a capsized yacht in Lake Michigan 2 miles to the shore, in the darkness of midnight and in the face of the wind and waves. He secured assistance for his companions, who, he feared, were not as able as himself to withstand remaining in the water until daybreak, before when it was very unlikely they would be able to attract notice. 1220-182
