Edwin E. Murray, 21, student, died attempting to save J. Edward Gibson, 26, accountant, from drowning, Ocean City, Maryland, September 2, 1919. Gibson was carried by an undertow into deep water in the Atlantic Ocean 135 feet from shore and called for help. A man swam to him and tried to help him, but they were carried farther from shore. Murray swam 85 feet to Gibson and tried to help him, and the other man left Gibson and swam to wadable water. Murray soon became separated from Gibson, disappeared under the surface, and was drowned. Another man swam to Gibson and then swam 75 feet with him to wadable water. Gibson was exhausted. 19928-1549
