Edwin S. Newlin died attempting to save Alta W. Waite and Nellie F. Anderson from drowning, Emporia, Kansas, July 17, 1912. Mrs. Waite, 22, and Miss Anderson, 27, neither of whom could swim, got into a deep hole in the Cottonwood River, 12 feet from the bank, and struggled together and called for help. Newlin, 50, farmer, who was the only person in the vicinity who could swim, waded rapidly toward them from the opposite side of the stream. When in water to his shoulders, he caught Mrs. Waite’s hand, took a step back toward the bank, and then, in answer to a call, turned to help Miss Anderson. At that moment, Mrs. Waite grabbed his hair and pulled him under the surface. He strangled and released his hold. The women sank and were drowned. After appearing at the surface for a few seconds, Newlin sank and was drowned. The bodies were recovered 30 minutes later. 8879-722
