Edwin V. Crowther attempted to save Barbara A. Currier from drowning, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, February 15, 1989. Mrs. Currier, 30, was caught in a rip current in the Atlantic Ocean when she entered the water to rescue her two sons, who had also been carried out by the current. Observing her plight, Crowther, 36, hotel manager, immediately entered the water and swam to her. Together they attempted to return to shore, but they made little progress against the current, and both quickly tired. Another man swam out and rescued Mrs. Currier, who was then taken to the hospital for treatment. Semi-conscious, Crowther was washed to wadable water, from which he was removed by bystanders. He too was taken to the hospital for treatment. Both he and Mrs. Currier recovered. Mrs. Currier’s sons were saved by others.
