Elbert W. Davis, 23, farmer, saved Victor F. Cesmat, 27, tractor engineer, from drowning, Emerald, California, May 31, 1917. Cesmat fell from a boat into a slough of the San Joaquin River and remained under the surface. Davis dived from the bank 12 feet to him and grasped his arm. Cesmat got back of Davis and took hold of him at the hips, and they drifted 80 feet in a swift current, being under the surface most of the time. Davis caught hold of a limb of a tree, and he and Cesmat held to it till a man in a rowboat reached them. They were then taken to the bank. Davis was nearly exhausted. 18747-1588
